Anh Ngữ: The Five Practices of Exemplary Leadership

Model the Way
Leaders establish principles concerning the way people (constituents, peers, colleagues, and customers alike) should be treated and the way goals should be pursued. They create standards of excellence and then set an example for others to follow. Because the prospect of complex change can overwhelm people and stifle action, they set interim goals so that people can achieve small wins as they work toward larger objectives. They unravel bureaucracy when it impedes action; they put up signposts when people are unsure of where to go or how to get there; and they create opportunities for victory.

Inspire a Shared Vision
Leaders passionately believe that they can make a difference. They envision the future, creating an ideal and unique image of what the organization can become. Through their magnetism and quiet persuasion, leaders enlist others in their dreams. They breathe life into their visions and get people to see exciting possibilities for the future.

Bài Vở: The Law Of Karma

The Law of Karma

Karma is a Sanskrit word meaning action. As we Buddhists use the term, the meaning is clearer if we describe it as action and reaction, or act and result. Another way to describe Karma is cause and effect.

When we plant rice, we do not expect a harvest of pepper. We do not make a first in order to produce coolness. In everything in life we find that if we know all the causes, then we can reliably predict the effects. For example, we know that if we are careless with matches, a fire is likely to result and may even destroy the house. But we also know that we can never burn down the house with ice. It is the nature of fire to burn and destroy. Ice has a different nature and produces entirely different effects. Let us think of producing something else. Let us pretend we want to bake a cake for someone’s birthday. We know we must have flour, salt, milk, flavoring, etc., and must mix all these ingredients carefully. Then, when we put the batter in the pan, we must have the oven at a certain temperature. After leaving the batter in the oven at a certain length of time, we take out the cake tin and let it cool. Then we have a cake. The cake is the effect or result, and the mixing of the proper ingredients and the right length of time in an oven at the right temperature is the cause.

Anh Ngữ: The meaning of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara Boat People Float (song Ngữ)

Kim Quang Temple, Sacramento, California

The meaning of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara Boat People Float
(For the Vietname Tet Festival – the year of the Dragon – 2012)

Boat People is a symbol of defiance, the desire for freedom, and symbolic history of the freedom-loving Vietnamese, who love and respect freedom, humanity, and human rights.
Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara – the one who listens to all languages of the world suffering – presents power of the Buddha Amitabha and brings compassion to ease all sentient beings’ suffering.
Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara Boat People float has symbolic of spirituality and history of the Vietnamese Nationalists. In Buddhism, the boat also indicates the "means" to reach "a destination or solution". When we reach the shores of freedom or enlightenment shores, then we no longer cling to the boat again, but to be thankful. Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara Boat People float represents the history and spirit of the Vietnamese boat people and all freedom-loving individuals.

Anh Ngữ: Realized

“When I got home that night as my wife served dinner, I held her hand and said, I’ve got something to tell you. She sat down and ate quietly. Again I observed the hurt in her eyes.

Suddenly I didn’t know how to open my mouth. But I had to let her know what I was thinking. I want a divorce. I raised the topic calmly. She didn’t seem to be annoyed by my words, instead she asked me softly, why?

I avoided her question. This made her angry. She threw away the chopsticks and shouted at me, you are not a man! That night, we didn’t talk to each other. She was weeping. I knew she wanted to find out what had happened to our marriage. But I could hardly give her a satisfactory answer; she had lost my heart to Jane. I didn’t love her anymore. I just pitied her!

And again from the seeds you sow
cloud and pour over again Gods
and again it plows the field
and always come back another owner
and again will ask beggars
and always will give donors
and always give new gifts
and find new heaven.

Up, Jenkins! (indoor game)

Players: 6 or more in two teams
Materials: Large coin, square table, chair for each player

Divide the players into two teams, each team sitting at opposite sides of the table. Both teams choose a Captain, who gives the commands for his team.

One team starts with a coin—preferably a large coin—that team members pass back and forth under the table. When the opposing Captain calls “Up, Jenkins!” the team with the coin must clench their hands and raise them above the table so that all hands are visible to the opposing team. Of course, the coin is hidden in one of these hands, and it’s the job of the opposing team’s Captain to find it.

Or, The 18 Lohans

Eighteen Lohans Bring Serene Energy Into Homes

An Arhat (or Lohan, in China) is a Buddhist who has reached the highest state of peace and enlightenment.  Seated in this lovely garden are the Eighteen Arhats (or Lohans, in China).  They have realized the truth of non-self, and that all is a composite of the five aggregates dependent on other phenomena, originally empty and subject to impermanence.  Having eradicated all passions, desires, and attachments to worldly things, each is foremost in his discipline.  The Arhats (or Lohans, in China) have overcome the defilements of greed, anger, and ignorance.  Their unique ways of practicing Bodhisattvahood have been inspirational for many Buddhists followers since the time of the Shakamuni Buddha. Although their outward appearances may be deceiving, their traits are subtle and beautiful in their own special ways.  If only one is able to recognize his or her own potential and work diligently to benefit oneself as well as others, the path towards Buddhahood can ultimately be attained.  (This beautiful Arhats Garden is located at Hsi-Lai Temple, Hacienda Heights, Southern California,
